I don't think Antlers is poverty porn. It's setting accurately depicted a specific type of American rural decay that is very real. Not the same type we'd see in Detroit (which has been mined to varying degrees of success several times), but many people are actually living in that type of environment. Certain jobs, paired with certain socioeconomic circumstances, can lead to certain types of substance abuse, which can lead to certain kinds of neglect and abuse. That is a reality, and something seldom depicted in any film, much-less genre films. The movie is by no means perfect, but if we are chasing diverse stories and hoping that everyone has a hero to identify with, I believe that some kids will see themselves in the character of Lucas. Some people struggle. Some people are abused. I like that this film acknowledges it.

Thanks to this, I watched “Censor” and “Saint Maud” as a double feature last night. My wife was none too happy that she had to watch something else so that the last shot of Saint Maud wouldn’t be the last thing she watched before going to bed. I had a good time though!

Really good point about 'joyless' horror movies. People often deal with stress with humor, and horror films that don't allow for that always feel less human. Which is a shame, because horror is one of the most universally human genres out there.

I also recently watched “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” and looked things up after. I don’t remember all the details, but it definitely was heavily based on a series of murders in the Texarkana (believe that was the region) that happened after WWII. They took creative liberty with the events and circumstance, though. The police were not as on top of things as they were portrayed to be.

I saw studio 666 in a theater. only 2 other people were in there with me, and they left halfway through. I had a good time with it, and the second "that" kill happened I knew it would be the golden chainsaw moment. look forward to a future kill count

I’ve grown so very tired of the Academy Awards in recent years. I used to be a staunch defender against those who said it was overly politicized but it’s all too evident now that they care more about their ratings than they do the films they’re supposed to honor.
